Surface Wave Phenomena.

Abstract

In this account the author surveys a number of aspects of surface wave phenomena in crystals. The propagation of elastic surface waves is discussed for both isotropic and anisotropic cases. The effect of piezoelectricity on surface wave properties is considered. Optical surface modes of vibration in crystals having either short range or long range interactions are treated. An elementary theory of surface plasmons is presented both with and without an external magnetic field. A treatment of surface spin waves from both the microscopic and macroscopic viewpoints is given. Our survey is concluded with a discussion of the mean square displacements of atoms at crystal surfaces. (Author)
