Features of Fatigue Mechanisms Clarified by Scanning Electron Microscopy.

Abstract

It is shown how the scanning electron microscopy can extend earlier observations on the origin and development of (a) plastic fatigue, (b) elastic fatigue, and (c) ultrasonic fatigue in metals. New observations bring out especially a hot spot phenomenon, details of strain concentrations, and exceptions to the two-stage theories of crack propagation. (Author)
