Development of a Five Inch Diameter, Mach 6.0, Monorail, Rocket Sled.

Abstract

A five inch diameter monorail rocket sled was designed, fabricated and tested at the Test Track Facility, at Holloman Air Force Base. The vehicle was designed to allow easy replacement of appendages which were subject to severe aerodynamic heating and/or high wear rates. The monorail vehicle as described was shown to be capable of reaching 6800 feet per second and of being recovered on the track. Drag coefficients up to Mach 6.0 were obtained and are presented in this report. (Author)
