A Dislocation Theory of Plasticity.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to formulate a continuum theory of dislocations, which could serve as a connecting link between solid state physics and the conventional plasticity and viscoplasticity theories. In addition, a modification of the classical theory is undertaken so as to accomodate finite deformations. The main features of this report are no assumption of infinitesimal deformation, multiplicative decomposition of the total deformation into a thermoelastic deformation and a plastic deformation, derivation of a kinematical relation between plastic flow and dislocation motion, formulation of a dislocation theory of plasticity, formulation of a finite-deformation theory of classical plasticity and a discussion of elastic and plastic material symmetries, a note on the importance of plastic spin in general and a proof that it is absent in the theory of isotropic materials, and examples dealing with simple deformations.
