Beam Divergence for Various Transverse Laser Modes,

Abstract

A theoretical determination of the quantitative effect of transverse laser modes TEM(mn) on beam divergence is reported. Relative beam divergences for the 15 laser modes TEM(00) to TEM(44) are calculated. From the general form for the family of transverse modes in a laser cavity, integrals over the intensity distributions are solved explicitly to obtain the fraction of the total power that is in a circular cross section of the beam. From curves of this fractional power versus radius of cross section, the beam divergence for each higher mode is determined relative to that for the TEM(00) mode. (Author)
