Decoupling of Large Deflection Dynamic Equations of Elastic Strings.

Abstract

The set of coupled nonlinear partial differential equations governing the large amplitude motion of an elastic string is reduced to a decoupled second order equation and a first order equation through a comparative study of characteristic arguments. The resulting equations reveal linear and nonlinear properties not previously apparent. These equations are also easier to solve but care must be exercised to comply with physical reality as the equations do not guarantee compatibility. Two examples are given to illustrate procedures for solving problems with the decoupled system. (Author)
