Development of the AFAPL Disk Tester for Gear Lubrication Research.
Abstract
The report describes the design and development of a disk-type tester for use in experimental investigations of gear lubrication with emphasis on scuffing. This tester features two independently-driven test disks, dual torque-monitoring system, and high-temperature and atmospheric-control capabilities; and represents considerable advancement over most of the disk-type testers currently in use. The methods for determining disk friction and disk surface temperature are discussed and preliminary calibration results are given. Preliminary scuffing results are also presented for three lubricants (a straight mineral oil, a MIL-L-7808G lubricant, and a MIL-L-23699 lubricant) run with test disks made of AMS 6260 steel.
