Some Low Temperature Research at the University of St. Andrews, University of Lancaster and University of Nottingham,

Abstract

The report describes research being carried out in Low Temperature Physics Programs at the University of St. Andrews, The University of Leicester and the University of Nottingham. It is clear that research at Ultra-low Temperatures (ULT) attainable by the use of dilution refrigerators is truly an exploding field of endeavor. In general the maintenance of these 'fridges' and the associated problems of thermal contact at ULT present formidable tasks to the graduate student so that the actual running times accumulated on a given 'fridge' is not too high. There is a shortage of graduate students and the new, spacious and well-equipped research laboratories are not being utilized to the extent envisioned. (Author)
