Methyl-closo-Carboranes, By-Products in the Synthesis of Lower Molecular Weight closo-Carboranes.

Abstract

In the production of the small close-carboranes by the thermal pyrolysis reaction between pentaborane-9 and acetylene, small concentrations of methylated close-carboranes are formed as by-products. Evidence indicates that the methyl substitutents in all of these compounds are attached to the skeletal boron atoms, thus retaining the difunctionality of the molecules necessary for formation of carborane-siloxane polymers.
