Mathematical Models for Geological Materials for Wave Propagation Studies.
Abstract
The paper presents a summary of the current state of the art in the mathematical modeling of the mechanical behavior of soil and rock over a range of environments in which the material can be considered to be a nonlinear hysteretic solid. These models have been developed for regions in which the pressure varies from peaks of tens of kilobars to fractions of a bar. They have been used in large finite difference and finite element computer codes to study ground shock problems. A general discussion and historical development of the mathematical models is presented. Detailed descriptions of the three basic types of models, i.e., elastic-ideally plastic, variable moduli and elastic-nonideally plastic (cap) models, and illustrative fits of these models to laboratory data are also given. While the paper deals primarily with strain rate independent models, an Appendix on strain rate dependent models is included. (Author)
