Conceptual Approaches in the Design of Optimal Radar and Sonar Systems: II. Formulation of Statistical Scatter Models in the Electromagnetic Case,
Abstract
The report continues the investigation in RM-5475 (AD-665 511) developing a statistical theory of electromagnetic wave scattering that--unlike present theory--takes account of the physical properties of the channel. The author has previously modeled signal-generated sonar reverberations in scalar fashion: however, for radar clutter, only a vector-tensorial theory can generally provide an adequate description of the scattered field. This new model uses wave theory for the detailed description of the scattered wave field, and ray theory for the macroscopic boundaries of beam patterns and scattering domains. A significant new feature is use of the weighting function of a linear, stochastic, time-varying dyadic filter. The scatteres, as well as the transmitting and receiving platforms, may be in motion that is partly random. The scattered received signal is derived, and its means and covariances are given. (Author)
