Normal Brain Cholinesterase Activity in the Pumpkinseed Sunfish.
Abstract
A modified automated thiocholine procedure was used to define and measure whole brain cholinesterase in the pumkinseed, Lepomis gibbosus Rafinesque. The fish were collected from July to December 1970 at three stations in the Gunpowder River, a tidal estuary on the Chesapeake Bay near Edgewood Arsenal, Maryland. Cholinesterase activity per unit brain weight varied inversely with brain weight and standard length and directly with water temperature. There was no significant variation in cholinesterase activity with sex and no differences in cholinesterase levels of specimens from those sampling stations that could be compared. Thus, estimates of normal brain cholinesterase activity were defined in terms of season and brain weight. (Author)
