A Study and Evaluation of the Effects of Various New Surface Diffusion Treatments.

Abstract

A series of steels were treated with various surface coating processes. With the exception of chromium plating, all surface treatments involved diffusion. Following metallographic examination, hot hardness and bend testing conducted during the initial phase of the program, ten material/surface coating treatments were selected for further test evaluation. These included: chromium plated, chromized and boronized 4150 steel; lonitrided Nitralloy 135 Modified nitriding steel; carburized, diffusion nitrided and Tufftrided low carbon H-12 steel; and boronized, siliconized and aluminized 250 maraging steel. These material systems were subjected to mechanical fatigue, thermal fatigue and chemical erosion tests. Considering the results of all tests performed, the Tufftrided and the diffusion nitrided low carbon H-12 steel appear most promising. The 250 maraging steel with various metallic diffusion coatings exhibited excellent resistance to thermal fatigue, but was poor in mechanical fatigue. (Author)
