Lightweight Gearbox Development for Propeller Gearbox Systems Applications. Phase I. Development of Ion-Sputtered Coatings for Titanium Alloy Gears.

Abstract

A process known as ion-sputtering was utilized to deposit several coating compounds on titanium gear tooth surfaces. Roller tests and small scale gear tests were utilized in the coating evaluation. The evaluation did indicate some potential for WC + 14% Co coating on a titanium substrate. However, surface imperfections are considered to have reduced the test duration significantly from that expected. (Author)
