Development of Beta-Spodumene Closed Pore Insulation (CPI).
Abstract
An investigation was conducted to develop a refractory (2300F) waterproof external insulation for the earth orbiting shuttle. Using beta-spodumene as the matrix material, both organic (fugitive) and inorganic pore formers, as well as foaming by means of chemical reaction and the use of a surfactant, were tried over a wide range of compositions, processing conditions, and geometries to obtain the desired properties. When pore formers were used, properties obtained on specimens less than 1 inch in diameter were not duplicated on larger sized specimens. Foams were weak, difficult to handle, and exhibited migration to the surface of what is believed to be binder material and other additives. A material was not obtained that possessed all of the desired properties. (Author)
