The Commonwealth: An Application of Event/Interaction Data.

Abstract

The paper relates five international behavior variables during the 1966-1968 time period to seven national attribute variables covering the years 1945-1964 for the 28 nations in the British Commonwealth. The behavior data included the number of acts initiated by a country, the number of acts received by a country, the number of countries to which an individual nation acts, the ratio of acts initiated to those received, and the ratio of cooperative acts to uncooperative acts initiated. Seven attribute variables were studied: gross national product per capita, defense expenditure as a percentage of GNP, executive stability number of years independent/number of chief executives, military personnel as a percentage of the population aged 15-64, membership of 161 international inter-governmental organizations in 1953, and dates of independence of Commonwealth nations. Analysis of the data included Pearson and Spearman correlations. (Author)
