The First Job After Graduation as a Measure of Departmental Performance.

Abstract

A new index is proposed for evaluating the performance of academic departments granting doctoral degrees. This index, based on the first job the student obtains after receiving his doctoral degree, is shown to be reliable over raters as well as over departments at the University of Illinois. The index, and the widely used rating of the American Council on Education are related to a variety of other measures of departmental operation and faculty productivity. (Author)
