Cycle Testing of ACS Valves in CLF5.

Abstract

The report documents testing conducted to establish a seat and poppet material and/or sealing concept for use in chlorine pentafluoride (ClF5) attitude control system (ACS) valves. Test results of nickel-, iron-, tungsten-, and zirconium-based materials in the flat-on-falt sealing concept as well as a sapphire/copper lip-seal concept are discussed. In tests conducted to date, two varieties of tungsten carbide in the flat-on-flat configuration (Kennametal 96 and Kennametal 801) are the only materials that have met the leakage requirement of 30 scc helium/hour after 100,000 actuations in ClF5.
