Development of a 100,000 Foot, Medium Fast Rise Balloon.
Abstract
Research was conducted with an objective of developing a low cost sounding balloon capable in all zones, by day and during night flight, of attaining a minimum altitude of 100,000 feet at an approximate ascensional rate of 1,500 feet per minute. A study was made of high modulus balloon films. Also, three designs for spherical, lenticular and carrier balloons were developed. Preliminary balloon models of the three designs were fabricated and evaluated in flight at Hanscom Field, Bedford, Massachusetts, Evaluation of flight results showed that the carrier type balloon meets flight specifications. This design is easy to handle in the field, provides rapid ascent rate from the ground to the tropopause, and can be manufactured readily in production at low cost. Twenty final engineering models of this carrier type balloon were fabricated for evaluation. (Author)
