A Study of Theories Concerned with the Formation of Primary Radioactive Particles in a Nuclear Fireball
Abstract
The application of nucleation-condensation and coagulation theories to the formation of radioactive fallout particles in a nuclear fireball is reviewed. It is concluded that, due to inherent complexities in the mathematical formulation of the theories and to the lack of accurate input data, these theories are not well adapted to the development of a simple model of radioactive particle formation. As an alternative, a semi-empirical 'kinetic' model of primary particle formation is presented. Suggestions are made as to how this model can be used to furnish input for a more sophisticated computer- programmed model of radioactive fallout formation.
