Transonic Range Tests of 5-Inch/54 Rocket-Assisted Projectile (Inert)

Abstract

The aerodynamic properties of an inert full-scale model of an experimental rocket-assisted projectile (RAP) for use with the U. S. Navy 5-inch/54 gun as determined by ballistic range tests through Mach numbers from 0.75 to 2.24 are presented. Analysis of the data indicated nearly linear aerodynamic properties at supersonic speeds but a strong dependence of the Magnus moment on yaw at subsonic and transonic speeds.
