Functioning Time and Related Studies of a 1-AMP/1-Watt Detonator
Abstract
Functioning characteristics of an insensitive electric detonator designed to meet the requirements of MIL-I-23659 were investigated. Functioning time characteristics for constant current input levels of 1 to 5 amperes and capacitor sizes ranging from 50 microfarad to 3000 microfarad were determined. An average functioning time of 3.4 milliseconds was observed at a 5-ampere input and 0.23 millisecond for the input from a 50-microfarad capacitor charged to 100 volts. Capacitor discharge Bruceton tests gave 50% firing energies ranging approximately from 1,000,000 ergs for a 50-microfarad capacitor to 1,500,000 ergs for a 300-microfarad capacitor.
