Ion-Molecule Reactions in the System CO2-CH4.

Abstract

Ion-molecule reactions in the system CO2-CH4 have been studied at pressures 0.1-0.4 torr in the ion source of a quadrupole mass filter. By employing mobilities to compute the residence time of ions in the source, reasonable values of the rate constant for several reactions have been determined. The values are somewhat higher than similar reaction rate constants for two of the reactions determined at low pressure. In one instance, the reaction apparently goes to equilibrium and from the equilibrium constant a reasonable value for the heat of reaction in close agreement with literature values was determined.
