Fundamentals of Amorphous Semiconductors

Abstract

The study of glasses has been important historically because of their great technological usefulness. One class of these materials, amorphous semiconductors, has evoked a great deal of interest during the past few years. The report is intended to provide an overview of the field, its present standing, and its promise. The fundamental structural and electronic properties and the present level of understanding of these properties is of primary concern. However, much of the progress in solid state physics has traditionally been motivated by technological considerations. Therefore, the principal aspects of the physics underlying the more important amorphous semiconductor devices are discussed, as well as the technological setting in which this new field finds itself.
