Study and Development of High Intensity Stopped Beam Plasma Sources.

Abstract

The report describes studies performed under the contract on the characteristics of the beam-plasma system generated by self-focused electron beams. The effects of the plasma characteristics and drift chamber geometry on propagation are discussed. Studies of the characteristic (line) X-rays are described as well as ultra-violet and visible region observations of the optical emission spectra in H2, He, O2 and Ar under typical beam entrance conditions of 40 kA at a mean energy of 1.5 MeV. The acceleration of light ions by the beam plasma system is demonstrated. Calculations are presented concerning the effect of the return current and the driving azimuthal magnetic field late in the pulse. (Author)
