Recent Results in the Theory of Controllability for Functional Differential Systems,

Abstract

The mathematical theory of control for functional-differential equations has tended to follow a path similar to that for ordinary differential equations. For example, the theory of optimization has been developed somewhat apart from (as well as ahead of) consideration of certain fundamental properties of the solution of such equations. Nontheless, it is clear that a property such as controllability or reachability of functional-differential systems is sharply relevant to question concerning the possibility of manipulating such systems via external forcing functions. The theory of controllability for functional-differential equations is about five years old, but is still showing signs of vitality. In this survey, which is restricted to linear systems, the author reviews some of the published literature on the subject, indicates some generalization and extensions, and reports some interesting new results recently obtained by colleagues of the writer.
