Specification of the Minimum Number of Glottal Pulses Necessary for Reliable Identification of Selected Speech Sounds.
Abstract
A panel of listeners was required to identify a series of nine vowels. In the series each vowel was represented by one-half a glottal pulse (about four msec in duration) or by a sequence of up to five glottal pulses (about 40 msec in duration). The order of presentation was randomized across vowels and number of glottal pulses. The minimum number of glottal pulses necessary for reliable identification of the vowels was determined, along with specification of the perceptual confusions which occurred. The results indicate that all the cues necessary for identification of the vowel were present in a single glottal pulse. (Author)
