Castable Elastomers and Plastics for Weapon System Components.

Abstract

New commercially available amine curatives for castable polyether urethane elastomers were evaluated to extend pot life and/or develop a liquid curative. Efforts to develop a liquid amine curative were unsuccessful but Curalon I was effective as a pot-life extender. Adiprene L-315 and LD- 955 were chosen for prototype fabrication of M16 rifle butt pads and artillery handwheels. Wing Stay T, carbon black, iron oxide, and titanium dioxide were effective in providing protection against UV radiation in the Adiprene type polymers. Several other liquid polymers were evaluated to determine their process capacity and obtainable properties. (Author, modified-PL)
