AFGWC Divergent Meso Scale Prediction Model.

Abstract

A follow-on improved meso-scale weather prediction model is described. Using the previously developed AFGWC meso-scale prediction model as a test-bed, a refined model was developed. Data initialization procedures were modified to separate the stream function from the irrotational component of the wind, retaining the divergent portion of the wind field. The resulting field, used as input to the prediction model, more nearly reflects actual atmospheric conditions without introducing spurious noise detrimental to numerical forecasts. (Author)
