A Critique of the Sharp Shock Procedure,

Abstract

The paper discusses claims made for a modification of a Particle-In-Cell (PIC) hydrodynamic code. The usual forms of PIC codes, like the artificial viscosity method of von Neumann and Richtmyer, represent shocks by a rapid but smooth variation of the independent variables over a span of approximately three spatial grid increments. The modification represents shocks by discontinuities whose jump conditions and propagation velocities roughly satisfy the Hugoniot relations. (Author)
