Two Conductor Infantry Field Wire.

Abstract

The report describes the design, fabrication, packaging and testing of two development models of two-wire infantry feild wire. The models were developed to provide reductions in size and weight over the presently used WD-1/TT field wire while maintaining equal or superior electrical and mechanical performance characteristics. The two developed models consist of a twisted pair configuration and a parallel pair configuration utilizing a figure '8' design. Each model is insulated with high density polyethylene without additional coverings. The combination steel-copper conductors presently used in WD-1/TT is used as the conductor in the development models. Each model is packaged in a redesigned MX-306 A/G field dispenser pack. The project consisted of laboratory design and development of necessary tooling for each configuration and the establishment of extrusion conditions. The established configurations were then factory produced. MX-306 A/G dispenser pack was redesigned to accommodate the new wire configurations and 100 dispenser packs of each item were assembled. Laboratory and outdoor testing of each new configuration was performed and certain tests were made with existing WD-1/TT field wire for comparative purposes. (Author)
