The Central Blood Transfusion Laboratory (CBTL) at Berne, Switzerland,

Abstract

The Central Blood Transfusion Laboratory (CBTL) at Berne, Switzerland, is an internally recognized laboratory which has pioneered the fractionation and production of stable plasma fractions; i.e., albumin, gamma globulin, cryoprecipitate, fibrinogen, and plasma protein solution (PPL). This laboratory has introduced and advocates a gelatin solution (physiogel) for use as a volume expander. The Experimental Surgery Department of Berne University works in close collaboration with the Central Blood Transfusion Center. The Experimental Surgical Group has studied problems related to and efficacy of gelatin and dextran solutions for use as volume expanders. In addition, treatment of cardiogenic shock using diastolic augmentation with a balloon technic has recently been introduced into clinical medicine. (Author)
