The Institute of Theoretical Physics, University of Warsaw, Poland,

Abstract

The report gives an account of a recent two-day visit to the Institute of Theoretical Physics of the University of Warsaw, Poland. The author concentrated mostly on the work of the Institute of Theoretical Physics, which today still bears the imprint and scientific legacy of the great Polish physicist Leopold Infeld (d. 1968), and particularly on the work of his former student and later valued collaborator, Prof. Jerzy Plebanski, Prorector of the University in charge of research, who was our host, and who is now internationally known for his work on general relativity, theory of gravitation, quantum electrodynamics, nonlinear electrodynamics, and allied topics. The author also gives an account of the Special Seminar which the author invited to give on a class of one-dimensional wave propagation problems in inhomogeneous plasmas, and on the favorable comments that this occasion elicited.
