Electron Impact Cross Sections and Rates for Excitation and Ionization of Hydrogen and Hydrogenic Ions,

Abstract

Semi-empirical electron impact cross sections and rates for excitation transitions of the type n to n' and for ionization from all levels with principal quantum number n < or = 10 are given for hydrogen and for hydrogenic ions of any Z. The results for hydrogen agree with the well established data to within about 25%. Those for hydrogenic ions are expected to be of comparable accuracy. Also semi-empirical cross sections and rates are given for transitions of the type nl to n'l' between the sublevels of the first three levels of hydrogen and hydrogenic ions. Coulomb-Born calculations were made for the 2l to 3l' and 1s to 3l' cross sections, which together with the other available cross section data were used in obtaining the semi-empirical results for hydrogenic ions.
