Aquatic and Marine Microorganisms, Interrelationships in Enrichment Cultures.
Abstract
The method of steady-state enrichment cultures was applied to the study of marine nitrifying bacteria. Steady-state enrichment cultures were employed to determine the range of organic compounds used by Sphaerotilus. Cultures grown on glucose plus mineral salts grew well in enrichment cultures but failed to grow in pure culture unless vitamins were added. It was concluded that associated bacteria were providing the necessary vitamins for growth of Sphaerotilus. A group of marine vibrios isolated from diseased salmon and herring were investigated by several methods. Strains of Vibrio anguillarum from the Pacific Northwest were closely related to strains from Scotland and Denmark. However, a number of other vibrios were clearly distinct, indicating that there are several kinds of marine vibrios. (Author)
