Analysis and Reduction of Harmonics and Filter Weight in Aircraft-Type Cycloconvertors.

Abstract

The operation of natural and forced commutation cycloconvertors is described, and the harmonic spectra of their outputs determined. A simple method is developed for comparing the weights of harmonic filters required for either type of cycloconvertor, and for determining the effect of design and operating parameters on filter weight. A claim, made elsewhere, that the filter weight of a naturally commutated cycloconvertor may be reduced using negative feedback to eliminate harmonics, is assessed theoretically: negative feedback is shown to be relatively simple to apply and the claim valid. It is proposed that negative feedback be applied to reduce filter weight when forced commutation is used. A novel method for applying it to a forced commutation cycloconvertor is described and analysed. (Author)
