The Koyna Earthquake of December 11, 1967, and the Performance of Koyna Dam,

Abstract

The principal objective of the investigation is to study the damage caused to Koyna Dam by the Koyna earthquake with the aim of recognizing the deficiencies that may exist in current design concepts for gravity dams. The study was not restricted to Koyna Dam, but includes consideration of other gravity dams and earthquakes. Also included in the work is a brief description of the geology and the seismic history of the area, a discussion of the relationship between the filling of the reservoir at Koyna Dam and the increase in seismic activity of the region, the properties of the Koyna ground motion and how they compare with those of California earthquakes, and a description of the damage caused to various structures of the Koyna project, buildings, and bridges.
