The Dynamic Structure of a Wind-Induced Eddy.

Abstract

The response of the ocean to an axisymmetric cyclone is investigated using a model based on the conservation of potential vorticity in the interior. The results, which confirm the conservation potential vorticity, are used to obtain limiting values of the vertical eddy diffusivity and an effective Ekman depth. Some aspects of the response as a function of the horizontal wavenumber are also investigated. It is found that high wavenumber motion does not penetrate as deeply as low wavenumber motion. (Author)
