Neutral Gas Lasers,

Abstract

Tables are given of all laser transitions in neutral atomic species reported up to August 1970. The tables include details of range of operation, product of, optimum pressure and tube diameter and type of excitation used to give laser oscillation. The following specific selective excitation mechanisms are discussed and graphically illustrated: excitation transfer, dissociative excitation transfer, optical pumping, electron impact, radiative cascade pumping, charge neutralization, and molecular photodissociation. Examples of each are given and referenced. Characteristics of two technologically important neutral gas lasers are fully described and illustrated. The references are specially selected to provide a source of information on selective excitation mechanisms in gas lasers. (Author)
