Polarization Properties of Stark-Shifted Lines Emitted by a Turbulent Plasma - I,

Abstract

Polarization patterns for Stark-shifted lines under the influence of a distributed electric field are derived for the case of unequal source strengths for pi and sigma polarized emission in order to understand the unexpected experimental results of the AFCRL group. Expressions are obtained for the elements of the density matrix as functions of the direction of observation and the polarizer angle, and guidelines are established for further experimental observations.
