Study to Development Homogeneous Aluminum Alloy Material Suitable for Cartridge Case Manufacture.
Abstract
Fourteen alloy compositions cmploying refined 99.99% aluminum as the base metal were fabricated into .063 inch sheet by procedures which resulted in less than 0.2 volume percent second-phase constituent particles in 11 of the 14 compositions. Strength-toughness characteristics of two variations of an Al-5.9 Zn-2.3 Cu-2.2 Mg basic alloy closely approached cartridge case alloy goals. Although of equal homogeneity, sheet of 2XXX, 6XXX and Cu-free 7XXX alloys had either significantly lower strength or toughness than that of the Al-Zn-Cu-Mg alloys. Strength-toughness characteristics of the Al-Zn-Cu-Mg alloys were related to the mode of fracture as well as to homogeneity. Electron microscopy revealed no structural differences related to mode of fracture or toughness parameter other than those resulting from precipitation treatment differences which affected the mode of fracture significantly.
