Effects of Interaction Distance: How Competent Are One's Teammates.

Abstract

The view which team members have of each other's competence was investigated. Four-man teams were subdivided into two dyads with different assignments leading toward a common goal. Interaction distance between the dyads was established by decreasing proximity, interaction, and contact. Dyads participated in an experimental simulation. Teams believed that they competing with another team, but were in reality exposed to programmed information. Teams either received an increasing number of failure messages or an increasing number of success messages. It was found that team members viewed those assigned to the lateral dyad as much less competent than they viewed the members of their own dyad. The effect was accelerated if the team were exposed to increasing success. Further, teams viewed themselves as somewhat more competent as success increased and as less competent as failure increased.
