Transient Stresses Due to Heating of a Plane Boundary.

Abstract

The solution to the problem of plane state of strain in a semi-infinite isotropic elastic medium subjected to an instantaneous line heat source at the boundary is obtained in closed form, in terms of tabulated functions. This solution is regarded as fundamental and is employed to derive solutions to transient thermal stress fields for several cases of boundary heating of practical interest. Closed form nature of the solutions are given, permitting detailed discussion of the fields. (Author)
