Comparisons of Coordinate Systems and Transformations for Trajectory Simulations

Abstract

Four right-hand orthogonal coordinate systems are defined and the transformations between these systems are developed. They are: a local topocentric launcher system, an earth-centered inertial system, a body axis system, and an aeroballistic axis system. The determination of time derivatives of direction cosines is used to transform information between the inertial and body systems. Euler angles are used to transform data between the inertial and aeroballistic axis systems. Strengths and weaknesses of these transforms are then compared. Finally, a comparison of results of trajectory simulations is presented.
