A Fast Sampling 4 Sensor System for the Measurement of Sound Speed and Temperature in the Ocean Using a Single Conductor Cable.

Abstract

The report describes a system for accurate in situ measurement of deep sea sound speed and temperature. Two 'sing around' sound velocity sensors are employed together with a precision FM output thermometer and pressure gauge. Frequency multiplexing of the sensor signals permits operation over an inexpensive single conductor cable. A fast scanning rate is obtained by the use of period average counting. Complete circuit details for each part of the system are given, which includes an inverted echo sounder for depth gauge calibration. The system described is the latest generation of data-gathering equipment used in compilation of the Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory, Columbia University, series of PRECISION SOUND VELOCITY PROFILES IN THE OCEAN, Volumes I-VI.
