Proteolytic Enzyme Production by Marine Bacteria.

Abstract

The objectives of this research project are: (a) To study the characteristics of proteolytic marine bacteria and the factors that influence their protease production. To isolate, purify and characterize the proteolytic enzymes of marine bacteria, and to study study in detail those enzymes that are potentially useful for medical, scientific or commercial needs. (c) To determine the distribution of proteolytic bacteria in the marine environment and the role played by these bacteria in their natural habitats. The large number of proteolytic bacteria in the marine environment, coupled with the multiplicity of enzyme production by each bacterium, held forth the promise of obtaining potentially useful enzymes out of a study of proteolytic enzyme production by marine bacteria. A summary of the study is presented. (Author)
