The Assessment of Career Motivation Among NROTC Applicants with the Strong Vocational Interest Blank.

Abstract

The majority of NROTC commissioned officers leave active duty shortly after completing their minimum service requirement. The purpose of this research is to evaluate an empirical retention scale, based on the Strong Vocational Interest Blank (SVIB) for use in selecting those NROTC (Regular) applicants most likely to remain on active duty beyond the minimum period required. Since 1964 the SVIB has been administered to various groups, including NROTC applicants, NROTC officers, Naval Academy midshipmen, and Naval Academy officers, among others. A comparison of the SVIB responses of high and low tenure NROTC officers yielded an empirical retention scale that has been evaluated in terms of predictive effectiveness, reliability, and fakability, and has been operationally used. The wide variety of validity, reliability, and fakability data collected on the SVIB N-6 scale consistently support the hypothesis that the scale does measure career motivation. On the basis of information now available, it is recommended that the SVIB N-6 scale continue to play a major role in the selection of candidates for officer training. (Author)
