Evaluation of Tissue Response to Commercially Available Dentifrices Clinical and Laboratory Results,
Abstract
Two clinical studies have demonstrated a relationship between the use of certain commercially available dentifrices and painful gingival inflammation, sometimes accompanied by swelling and gingival slough. The condition has been diagnosed as dentifrice stomatitis. Preliminary laboratory investigations demonstrate that those dentifrices most frequently associated with dentifrice stomatitis produce severe inflammatory response in hamsters. Further clinical studies are needed to determine the prevalence of dentifrice stomatitis in the general population and to evaluate the possible interaction between dentifrice, mouthwash and oral hygiene practices. Additional laboratory studies are required to evaluate the histologic response to all available dentifrices when applied topically and implanted subcutaneously and to identify the causative constituents.
