Stagnation-Point Free-Convection Film Boiling on a Hemisphere,

Abstract

The investigation treats stagnation-point free-convection film boiling on a hemisphere in a liquid at saturation temperature and atmospheric pressure both theoretically and experimentally. An inertial dominant equation of motion for the interface is derived by extending the approach of Bradfield to account for vapor-layer pressure variations normal to the interface. A viscous dominant solution is obtained in similar fashion, adapting the basic approach of O'Brien to the present boundary conditions. The theoretical results are compared with experimental measurements of vapor-layer thickness, interfacial dynamics, and surface heat flux on a one-inch radius hemisphere-cylinder with Freon-11 as the film-boiling fluid.
