The Conditions of Formation and the Possible Nature of 'Giant' Virions of Venezuelan Equine Encephalomyelitis Virus,
Abstract
Different suspensions of the virus of Venezuelan encephalomyelitis of horses (VEE) were studied by the methods of negative staining and using an electron microscope. A suspension of uncloned wild virus contained 14% of 'giant' virions having a diameter of 120 millimicrons or more. In genetically pure lines isolated from the 'wild strain', no 'giant' virions were found. They appeared again in the virus progeny in the course of mixed infection of cell cultures with two or several clones of the virus differing in the make-up of genetic markers which in themselves contained and produced in the progeny only virions of the usual size of 60 to 95 millimicrons. The percentage of 'giant' virions (3.1 - 13.9) and the possibility of their formation depended upon the properties of interacting genomes. The origin of the 'giant' virions is explained by genetic interaction between genomes reproducing in one cell and differing from one another.
